PIONEERS OF VITICULTURE IN THE REGION.
The Winery.
LOS CERROS DE SAN JUAN FEATURES A WINERY AND WINE CELLAR BUILT FROM STONE, CREATING THE PERFECT ENVIRONMENT FOR PRODUCING HIGH-END WINES UNDER IDEAL HUMIDITY AND TEMPERATURE CONDITIONS.
HISTORIC BUILDINGS
The architectural heritage mostly dates from the second half of the 19th century, with numerous stone buildings featuring thick walls and a colonial style.
THE AGING CELLAR
Built from stone with walls over 60 cm thick, the aging cellar is carved into the hillside across two levels. Temperatures range between 12º and 18ºC throughout the year.
Tradition and innovation
in wine aging.
DIFFERENT AGING ALTERNATIVES FOR OUR WINES
Structural solidity of the stone is complemented by cocciopesto amphorae and tulip-shaped cement and stone containers, all imported from Italy. These vessels play a key role in the production of our high-end wines, allowing minimal intervention so that the grapes can genuinely express the unique characteristics of our Terroir. We have also incorporated new French and American oak barrels to further expand our aging options for our finest wines.
The terroir.
ITS EXCELLENT GEOGRAPHIC LOCATION AT THE CONFLUENCE OF the RÍO DE LA PLATA AND RÍO SAN JUAN RIVER MAKES IT UNIQUE FOR PRODUCING HIGH-QUALITY WINES, WITHROCKY SOILS ON THE SLOPES OF THE HILLS.
LOCATION
Located in the Colonia Department, Uruguay, the landscape features gently rolling hills interspersed with numerous rivers and streams. The region’s climate and soil characteristics make it the ideal place for vine cultivation. Surrounded by nature, the grapes thrive in a healthy, natural environment.
CLIMATE
The climate in this region—nestled among gentle hills and close to the San Juan and Río de la Plata rivers—features sunny summers with cool nights, providing significant thermal variation (up to 18ºC). The seasons are well-defined, with occasional rainfall. The considerable temperature fluctuation at harvest time benefits grape quality.
SOIL
The viticultural potential of these soils is determined by the rocky nature of the surrounding mountain ranges, which provide excellent drainage. The grapes grow on pebble-strewn terrain, reaching perfect maturity thanks to the favorable climate.
Vineyards
1. VIÑA DON MIGUEL
This vineyard is located to the west of “Cañada Cortao” in a soil formation, completely different from the others and very close to the winery. It consists of rugged, rolling terrain with rocky hills over a crystalline basement. This is a new terroir currently being explored.
2. VIÑA LAS PIEDRITAS
Rock outcrops are common here, giving this vineyard its name. The soils are shallow and dark, with a sandy-loam texture and gravel containing visible minerals. This is where our white grape varieties reach their fullest expression.
This vineyard shares its geology and soils with Viña Vieja, and is also located in one of the highest areas of the estate. The significant presence of laminated rocks and schists provides excellent drainage for this soil, despite its shallowness.
This vineyard shares much of its soil with Viña Las Piedritas, though with slightly steeper slopes. It is associated with variable geologies, including granites, migmatites (veined rocks), and schistose metamorphic rocks. This terroir is highly valued for its rocky nature and the distinctive characteristics it imparts to red wines.
Located on the eastern edge of Viña Vieja, this vineyard is home to a collection of century-old vines, giving it the name "Museo" (museum). The soils are dark brown, sandy loam, with medium depth and fertility.
